Founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner, 'Mothers' Union', a Christian organisation of the established church, was intended for mothers with young children to share in fellowship spiritually and socially.
The organisation is now worldwide and at this time has approxiamately 3.6 million members. Head Office is London based and is administered under a written consitution which also controls all Diocesan and Deanery branches in the country, each with their own representatives at all levels of office.
The work of Mothers' Union is both unique and varied. The Diocese of Monmouth is twinned with The Highveldt in Southern Africa.
The aim of the Mothers' Union at this time is to work for the eradication of world poverty, especially in the areas of debt, trade and aid in the third world.
S. Stephen's branch of Mothers' Union meets at 2pm on the first Tuesday of each month, commencing where possible with Mass in church, then on to a meeting with a guest speaker or business or social activities.
Mothers' Union is no longer restricted, but is now open to young and old, male and female. A warms welcome is extended to any new-comers at S. Stephen's Church.
